It's the worst because it's not funny and is quoted to no end. It's articles about things I don't care about written by idiots who think bukkake-ing their work with n-words and gay jokes (well, "jokes") is funny. Encyclopedia Dramatica is the worst.

I know exactly what you are talking about, but it's pretty obvious from a cursory glance that most of those articles/stubs are regarding issues, figures, raids, etc. that have either emerged since the influx of newfags, or have returned to prominence in the newfag era. Judging by your post, I will assume you've mainly looked at more recent content, or content that has been polluted by the newbies and their failed attempts at lulz. Why do you think most users that have been around the scene for a while refer to them as "the cancer"? Because they have nothing much to offer besides "LOL NIGRAS" and "U PFAIL FAG LOLZ". Reading for five minutes about the Habbo raids and Operation MySpays doesn't make you an expert.
Everyone is welcome to partake in the lulz, but it cannot be reiterated enough that people need to lurk a little and gauge what's what before diving in headfirst. Too many people have clogged up ED, the *chans, etc. with shitty posts, lame forced memes (which inevitably fail harder than NZ Fail Guy) and general symptoms of Newfag Syndrome these days.

It was a major hub for new memes to be spawned, or for users to post up stubs that lampooned hot-button issues mercilessly. There used to be much more crossover quality as well: whether it be ED ---> *chans, or *chans ---> ED. Not saying that these elements are completely gone, but they have been drowned out somewhat by, as you pointed out, a shitstorm of gay & black jibes. This is what happens when too many people hear about something though, it gets diluted and the overall quality gets compromised. I've seen way too many stubs get deleted in the past year or so because they have been edited beyond recognition (read: ruined). It's why I don't actively post content on the site anymore... why do it when some newbie is just going to step in and butcher the shit up something awful?
There are some really good ED/chan archives around the tubes though. Some stuff couldn't be saved, but a fair portion has been maintained in its original state for posterity.

Well, for a while it was a relatively closed and underground community. It only really got people's attention when media (be it TV, print or online) outlets started reporting about some of the raids and bogus death/bomb threats posted up around the scene.
