Death Proof isn't all that good (in my opinion) save for the epic car chase. But if you like tacky zombie flicks, gore, etc. then Planet Terror is well worth checking out.

I liked Death Proof. Sure, the first group of girls were irksome and unlikeable, but then we got to see them mashed up in gory detail in the car crash. The second group I liked more. And Stuntman Mike was an awesome villain.

It surprises me that you liked it. Most fans ended up leaving that movie being like "OH GOD QUENTIN! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?!" and feeling a tinge of disappointment. Luckily he has a great body of work to fall back on... everyone's gotta churn out a lemon sometime.

While I was disappointed in Death Proof, I still enjoyed it. It had some great moments... I really wish it would have been more "Grindhouse-esque." Considering all the build-up and buzz, I was expecting much more errors and whatnot... Quentin ended up using the gimmic only a few times, while resorting to his normal filmmaking for the rest.
That being said, I'd say "Death Proof" is on par with "Jackie Brown." I think that Kill Bill (both of them, considering they were initially one film split into two parts) is his best movie. It's got the most heart out of all of his films, in my humble opinion, and was still fun as hell.

A lot of people have said this so I hate to beat a dead Hoof Girl, but I think Death Proof would have been better received if they had reversed the order. It would have just flowed so much better if Death Proof had gone first.

You're probably right. Planet Terror was a hard act to follow.
Mittens, you didn't like Jackie Brown I take it? Fair enough I guess. For me, Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction are the best Quentin movies, but like I said it, he's got a great body of work on the whole. If you put someone else's name on Death Proof, I probably wouldn't have expected quite as much and hence had a more favourable view of it in the end.

Well it's not even just that Planet Terror was a tough act to follow. Just that Planet Terror was balls to the wall for pretty much the whole time, and then the trailers were condensed versions of the same, and then Death Proof was dialogue that built to violence. Stick any movie there, no matter how great, with that structure, it's not going to work. Hell, you could've stuck Taxi Driver, which builds to the violence similarly to DP, there and it wouldn't have flowed quite right, and a better film than Taxi Driver has not been made. Put Death Proof first and it starts with talking, builds up to the awesome car chase, and then the awesome is allowed to flow uninterrupted until the end of the second feature.

Death Proof is a movie filmed by Tarention and starring Kurt Russel and people are saying it is bad. I cannot believe this to be true.
Much watch post haste.

Yeah, when you said to me at the video store "Kurt Russel is my favourite actor ever" it took a lot of effort to keep from saying anything too vicious about DP. For all we know, you love it and your Russel-reaming continues without any further hindrance.

It's not that I disliked Jackie Brown... I thought that the plot was absolutely brilliant, but it lacked in acting and dialog. There's a reason that it's not nearly as popular as Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, and Kill Bill. It just doesn't have the same kick as those films.
On a similar subject, I'm starting to think that Robert DeNiro is a very overrated actor. He was the worst part of Jackie Brown... his comedic roles have either been absolute shit OR funny the first time but not upon multiple viewings, and he often plays the same character. He's had some absolutely brilliant roles, don't get me wrong... but look on his whole career, I figure he's very much hit-or-miss.
