Would you sell out your friends and school you volunteer a lot of time to the past three or four years because of a regime change and they no longer require your services?
Let me get into a little more detail.
I keep track of everything the baseball does, and every where it goes. I've been doing it for three years. This is the beginning of the third season.
Its technically sabermetrizing, and keeping said stats is called a sabermetrician. The study of baseball statistics.
After just two games, I have a 30 page packet of statistics. Offensive, pitching, and defensive, opponents stats, platoons (batting left, batting right), situational (How many outs, how many runners on), where they batted in the line up to start an inning, spread charts, and your basic statistics like AVG, RBIs, Runs, and Hits.
To go into more detail will bore you unless anyone here follows what I do.
Now I bleed blue and white. I love my high school. But apparently the respect can not be returned. As previously stated I do this for free. I have REFUSED money because then it becomes a whole seperate level. I become required to do things, and I don't have free run of how I do things. Being an 'independant contractor", aka, volunteer, is much more beneficiary than being paid to me.
But in between football and baseball season this year (During basketball season to be exact), the athletic director I worked through walked away due to circumstances out of his control. Now I never had the greatest relationship with the guy, but he got screwed. So enter the most SPORTS INEPT athletic director EVER. The guy is such a dumb ass when it comes to sports its ridiculous.
And apparently my role as statistician was also relieved during the winter, unknowingly to me. To a player on last years team. Who was a senior and graduated. Who is also the coaches, best friends, son. Thats my not my problem. He can take HIS stats ad fucking shove it, because I know what I do is FAR MORE in detail than anything he's doing. He really, no lie, can't even do basic math. He fucked up the score board during todays game. I've been studying what I do, since the end of last season. Spent the entire summer, fall, and winter studying this field (sabermetrics) as extensively as I could
I'm sure none of you have ever heard of Georgia Tech's college sabermetrician. But he's one of the reasons the Georgia Tech's baseball team is as good as they are. Sure the coaches play a part, sure the players talent plays a part, but his study of every little thing they, and the opponents do, have also been key. He has been credited with winning their national championships because his study prepared the team and coaches for their game plans.
And that's what I do. expect I feel utterly and absolutely disrespected. The coaches don't use what I give them. Or they do, and don't accept what I told them would be true and think it's their knowledge that resulted in said outcome. Its happened two of three times in three games this year, let alone countless times last year.
I just feel like Im wasting my time. Im a volunteer. And I bend over backwards for this team. I absolutely love what I do. I love this town. I love baseball. And thats the end all. I turned down a very well paying second shift job I had lined up, so I could do this absolutely full time until the end of the season. I had a job last year during the season, and it fucked with a few games and I didn't want that problem again. (Thus my interview tomorrow for a third shift job at a different place)
So not only do I not require pay for what I do. But I turned down a job to do what I do.
And now the problem is...do I go to a team that can appreciate what I do? Like, say,...our rival team?
Because I know what I keep track of can beat my own team. I have following them for three years. I know how they swing. I know what they swing at. I know when they swing (At the ball, and during the count) I know where most of them will hit it. I know how patient people are. I know how aggressive they can be (resulting in being over aggressive and getting out). I know where they fucking STAND IN THE FIELD (And not approximate either). I know when the coach likes to steal. I know basically everything someone can about this team. For fucks sake, I even know his signs.
And I'm wondering if I should sell my friends and loyalty to this town and team up the river, just so I can appreciated in what I do.
What do you guys think?
...if anyone would like a copy of the statistics I do, to actually see what I study I'll feel free to send them to you...
