Last night I went out for a gig, seeing a Philadelphia progressive (like Neurosis, Cult of Luna, Isis, etc. TRANSLATION: fucking awesome) outfit by the name of Rosetta. Both of their albums are quality, but my word did the live show make the most of the recorded material. The ambient noise set the tone, Mike was intense with his vocal performance, Dave & Bruce were fantastic with the bass & drums respectively and Matt's guitar/violin playing was supreme. Their sound was immense, for a band with only one guitar they had a tone which would shred the balls from most of these new-school bands who call themselves heavy. And for a progressive band, I really liked the occasional boosts in speed, wherein the rhythm section went nuts and Mike's vocals took another step up. In short - they fucking ripped it up.
Now here's why I'm posting this thread, besides to tell you guys how awesome the show was. They were playing a venue here called The Arthouse, which is a small venue for local gigs tailored for about 40 payers. By my estimate, 60+ were in attendance and Mike declared that it was the biggest, most appreciative audience the band had played in front of. When I spoke with members earlier in the night, they voiced the same sentiment, which hurt. Bands like Cult of Luna and Isis are able to play big shows in front of large audiences, which is well deserved as they are great bands. But maybe a label like Ipecac or Hydra Head could pick up Rosetta for their next album, because with a little backing they could reach the same stature. Give them the exposure their music (especially when witnessed live) warrants, and their fan-base will grow considerably.
As for this tour, it took a Brisbane dude, a major fan of the band, to dip into his own pocket for it to come to fruition. What I am saying is give these guy a shot, I know that a fair few of you here have a good appreciation of music. Check out some of their tunes on MySpace, and see what they bring to the table live on YouTube. It doesn't sit well with me to see a band this good having their biggest ever audience around the 60 mark.
